mv Skin Type Tips & Secrets

Skin Health - Inside and Out

We all understand the principle of fresh foods for the body. Eating a well balanced diet, including lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, drinking plenty of water and avoiding too many refined, denatured and adulterated foods.

Nowadays we wash our fruits and vegetables due to the knowledge we have of pesticides and their possible effect on our body. Yet we continue to cover ourselves in petrochemicals, carcinogens, neurotoxins and skin irritants on a daily basis.

This is not because we don't care about chemical ingredients being absorbed into our body. The fact is, most of us are unaware that many ingredients commonly used in skincare and cosmetics can be harmful.

This is the passion behind MV, providing organic skin nutrients which are safe, effective and uncomplicated. MV utilises the purest essential oils and organic ingredients to deliver both exceptional results and health benefits.

A healthy diet and lifestyle do not always ensure good skin. Often factors out of our control such as hereditary problems, hormonal imbalance, medication and medical procedures can affect the way our skin looks. Also certain lifestyle choices such as the foods we eat and drugs & stimulants we take will ultimately impact on our skin.

Great tips for clearer healthier skin:

Tip 1 – From the inside out...

Start your day with a glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon. A great way to stimulate digestive function and cleanse the liver. This in turn will benefit your skin by promoting optimal liver clearance and thereby lessening the load on the skin as an organ of elimination. Also, by supporting digestive function you enhance the absorption of nutrients which is essential for healthy skin as well as health generally.

Tip 2 – ALWAYS remove your make up at the end of the day

Cleanse thoroughly with a gentle non-stripping cleanser in the evening so all traces of make-up and grime are removed. Sleeping with a film of cream based make up over your face means your skin has an occlusive film over it from the moment you apply it in the morning until you cleanse the next morning. 24hours without the skin breathing, secreting and excreting properly leads to dull, congested, lazy skin!!!!!!!

Tip 3 – ALWAYS remove your cleanser with a warm to hot cloth (compress style cleansing)

How? After applying your MV Gentle Cream Cleanser, immerse a face washer or muslin cloth in a sink filled with warm to hot water. Squeeze out tightly then press the cloth over your face. Take a long slow and deep breath - making sure you really do relax. The steam will activate the essential oils within the cleanser, allowing them to become air-born. Repeat this twice more then observe how much more relaxed and calm you feel.  The positive effects of this aromatic cleansing experience will soon become a ritual you won't want to miss. Correct and thorough compress cleansing also allows your skin to benefit more fully from the products you apply afterwards.

Tip 4 – Even out skin tone and minimize blemishes

To maintain clear smooth skin and balance out an oily t zone this summer apply our Calming & Softening Mask once or twice a week. Perfect to use directly on blemishes and breakouts to speed the skins own healing process. Instantly reduces flushing and redness, visibly evening out skin tone in just 7 minutes. This ultra-softening mineral-rich mask is also a miracle hand treatment so make sure you mix up extra and treat those neglected hands at the same time.

Tip 5 – Intense nourishment instantly

The winter can be a very drying time for most skins so here's a quick-fix tip to deeply nourish dry, flaky skin.

Cleanse face thoroughly then warm your hands in a warm-hot water. When your hands are very warm, quickly dry then place 4-6 drops of an MV Skin Booster in the palm of one hand, press palms together then smooth the oil over your face and neck. Perform a gentle massage of your face for 1-2 minutes then immerse your MV Muslin Cleansing Cloth in warm-hot water, squeeze out tightly then press onto face and holds for a count of 5 - repeat several times then finish with one full pump of your favourite MV Moisturiser. Massage gently for 1-2 mins then have an early night. A boost of intense nourishment along with a little bit of extra rest will significantly improve dry, flaky and dull skin overnight.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a type of chronic skin inflammation that typically affects the face and is characterized by enlarged and broken capillaries – resulting in lasting redness. The forehead, cheeks and chin may develop yellow-headed pimples. Although originally named Acne Rosacea, this condition is not a type of acne. It is not driven forward by Propionibacterium so should not be treated with acne medications.

Symptoms include:

• Enlarged and broken capillaries
• A permanent flush across the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin
• Yellow-headed pimples on the forehead, cheeks and chin
• Break outs of small lumps under the skin
• Tendency to blush easily
• A sensation of burning or stinging, particularly around the eyes
• Red, bulbous nose

Risk factors

The cause of rosacea is unknown. Some researchers believe that people with rosacea are sensitive to the Demodex folliculorum mite, a microscopic insect that can inhabit the pores of the skin - although this has not been proven.

Some of the factors that can trigger rosacea or worsen symptoms include:

• Alcohol
• Hot drinks
• Coffee and tea
• Spicy foods
• Overexposure to sunlight
• Anxiety
• Emotional stress
• Overheating
• Wind
• Exercise
• Hot baths or showers
• Unsuitable skincare and make-up
• Chemical sun-screens
• Soaps
• Medications
• Hormone-related conditions

Causes can be either genetic or environmental:

Genetic

Rosacea often runs in families and there is a strong tendency for rosacea to affect fair skin people, especially those with blue or blue/green eyes.

Environmental

Sun-damage often plays a part in the development of rosacea so anyone who has fair skin and has a history of excessive sun exposure, may be more susceptible to developing rosacea.

Alcohol is definitely not a cause of rosacea but may trigger outbreaks in some individuals.

Can it be cured?

No, but it is very easy to manage so that the condition does not progress.

Early diagnosis is crucial. The earlier the diagnosis, the sooner you can begin looking after your skin and avoid the triggers which set off an inflammatory attack and further damage your skin.

Managing Rosacea

1. Work out your triggers

• Everyone is different. You might like to keep a diary to see if there is a pattern.
• Avoid the sun.
• Avoid chemically laden skincare and cosmetics
• Avoid chemical sunscreens
• Avoid hot showers and baths – instead use warm water.
• Limit or avoid the triggers

2. Control the active symptoms of rosacea

• Use gentle skincare
• Talk to your naturopath about addressing your inner health and the health of your skin from within. We all love a ‘quick fix’ but it is important you are patient and allow the necessary time it takes for your body to respond to the changes your naturopath has recommended.
• If the symptoms do worsen and become unmanageable – talk to your GP.

3. Develop a gentle and simple skin care regime

• Adopt a ‘less is more’ approach to your skincare regime – clear out your bathroom cabinet so you are not tempted to use up products that are no longer suitable.
• Do not overburden your skin with heavy and occlusive creams
• Do not irritate your skin with harsh foaming cleansers or exfoliating scrubs.
• Swap your chemical (UV absorbing) sun screen for a natural light reflecting sun screen that contains zinc.
• Do not over stimulate your skin with fruit acid based products, strong enzyme or chemical peels.
• Maintain a simple and gentle routine; to avoid over-heating the skin use a warm (not hot) compress when cleansing and gently smooth moisturiser over the skin rather than using a rubbing action.
• If at any time you feel the skin begin to over-heat, place a cool compress on the skin

Exzema

What is eczema?

Eczema is an inflammation of the skin causing the skin to become red, dry and itchy. Severity varies from person to person with some people experiencing nothing more than a mild itchy rash on a small part of the body. For others, the eczema can cover the entire body, can be extremely itchy and painful, with cracks appearing that, if left untreated, can become infected.
Eczema can develop on any part of the body but in children, it’s most common on the face, scalp and the skin folds where moisture can be trapped.

Symptoms include:

    • Itchiness
    • Redness
    • Dryness
    • Scaling
    • Inflammation
    • Pale skin and possible loss of pigmentation
    • Thick leathery skin

    ^ top

Causes and triggers

A common belief is that eczema is caused by food allergens. Whilst this may be partly the case, there are many other possible causes and these vary from person to person.
What triggers the skin to break out in eczema also varies from person to person
Eczema is most common in people with a family history of asthma, eczema or hayfever, indicating a genetic component to the condition.

Common triggers:

    • Foods such as cows milk, wheat, nuts, rice, alcohol, coffee and food additives.
    • Environmental factors including dust mites, pollens, animal hair and saliva and fungal spores
    • Man made products such as washing detergents, household cleaning products, perfumed soaps, bubble baths and shampoos, fragranced moisturisers and personal care items.
    • Emotional stress, woollen clothing, synthetic fabrics which can overheat the skin, excessive bathing and hot showers.

^ top

Managing Eczema

Avoid your triggers as much as possible, particularly anything that will dry the skin further like soaps, perfumes and chemicals. The most important aspect of treating eczema is to keep the skin well moisturised as this relieves the itching sensation.

Thankfully there has been a move away from steroid based creams which do have side effects and are unsuitable for long term use.
There are now many natural alternatives to relieve the symptoms of eczema and here at MV we recognise the growing number of people looking for more natural solutions to better manage this frustrating condition.

Eczema friendly MV products include:

    • Gentle Cream Cleanser
    • Gentle Cleansing Bar (low pH, all organic super-fatted bar)
    • Pure Jojoba • Rose Hydrating Mist
    • Rose Soothing & Protective Moisturiser
    • Rose Plus Booster
    • Daily Soother Booster

    ^ top

Also a visit to a naturopath is an important way to manage eczema internally. They can help guide you through elimination diets to determine your main food triggers and recommend supplements that may help including fish oil and Omega 3, 6 & 9 which are varieties of essential fatty acid oils.

PLEASE NOTE, many skin conditions and disorders are the body’s way of throwing off what it is not happy with. Allowing the skin to be an ‘exit point’ I believe is a much healthier approach to suppressing a condition with a steroid cream, which in turn, can compromise the immune system and internal organs associated with detoxification. Where the condition is through contact, removing the trigger is more straight forward but not always practical. If it is part of your chosen career, such as hairdressing, gloves should be worn while preparing and applying tints, dyes, bleaches and perming solutions.

MV Daily Skincare Routine for Eczema

Desensitizing & Strengthening Programme

CLEANSING

Where skin is severely reactive, use Pure Jojoba on a damp make-up removal disc to cleanse entire face or for milder skin sensitivity, wet fingertips, smooth Gentle Cream Cleanser over face then gently wipe away using a warm damp muslin cleansing cloth or face washer

^ top

HYDRATING

Where skin is severely reactive, spritz a fine veil of pure spring water over the face or immerse muslin cloth in *oatmeal water and press on the skin, then while the skin is still damp, moisturise following instructions below

For milder skin sensitivity, spritz a fine veil of Rose Hydrating Mistover the face immediately after cleansing

 ^ top

MOISTURISING

Mix 2-3 drops of Pure Jojoba with half a pump of Rose Soothing & Protective Moisturiser. While skin is still damp, gently smooth over face, neck and any other areas of sensitivity

AFTER 4 WEEKS

Introduce Rose PlusBoosteror Daily Soother Booster. Mix 2 drops with half a pump of Rose Soothing & Protective Moisturiser then gently press on to the skin.

Always patch test a newly introduced products first

 ^ top

AFTER 12 WEEKS

Once you have followed above de-sensitising programme for a minimum of 12 weeks, the Calming & Softening Mask can be introduced.

Always patch test a newly introduced product first. If the skin does not react, use once a week. For optimum results, always remove the mask before it dries completely.

*Oatmeal Water is obtained by immersing an oatmeal stocking in warm water and allowing the mucilage from the oats to seep out.

Firstly, purchase inexpensive stockings from the supermarket then place a hand inside one of the legs, grab a handful of oats then remove your fist while turning the stocking inside out. Tie a knot to form an oatmeal ball then cut and repeat until you have approximately 10-12 oatmeal balls. Store in a dry place and keep on hand to help relieve some of the symptoms associated with eczema and dermatitis such as itching, burning and tightness.

These oatmeal balls can be placed in a warm bath or for more concentrated oatmeal water, placed in a basin of warm water. The soothing ‘milky’ water can then be wiped over the skin with cotton wool or a muslin cloth.

NEVER allow moisture to evaporate on the skin. Apply the Rose Soothing & Protective Moisturiser (or a combination of the Rose Moisturiser with 2-3 drops of Pure Jojoba) straight away. This helps to lock in much needed moisture to hydrate and relax the surface of the skin.

mv Ingredients Guarantee

Almond Oil - Organic

Our sweet almond oil is warm pressed (you can’t actually cold press it) from the kernels. It contains individual triglycerides plus the fatty acids, linoleic, oleic, stearic and palmitic.  It has antibacterial properties, is an excellent emollient and demulcent (forms protective film, soothing irritation) and is slowly absorbed through intact skin.
Rosemary Extract

Extract of Rosemary Oil is a natural anti-oxidant which is used in all MV oil blends.

Avocado Oil - Organic

Avocado oil contains both saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids and vitamins A, B and D and is rich in lecithin. It is a nourishing oil which is excellent for mature, dry and dehydrated skins.

Benzoin

Our benzoin is a naturally occurring product formed by injury to the tree (styrax). Benzoin has both antiseptic and stypic properties (stops bleeding). It is also a natural preservative and antioxidant.

Calendula Oil - Organic

Our calendula is manufactured by the ancient herbal technique of oil extraction. The flowers are immersed in olive oil and the oils of the calendula are slowly and gently extracted. Can also be found in a highly concentrated form from carbon-dioxide extraction, this would then be diluted in oil. Calendula's properties as a skincare agent are renown. It is used in Europe for skin and mucous membrane inflammations, hard to heal wounds, burns and as an immuno-stimulant for skin inflammations. It is also famed in folk remedies for treatment of bruising, sore nipples cuts, wounds and eczema.

Camellia Oil - Organic

Rich in Vitamins A, B, E and other minerals, Camellia oil promotes elasticity of the skin and is said to minimize the appearance of ageing considerably if used regularly. It is also soothing to dry and sensitive skin.

Carrot seed oil

We use carrot seed oil that is steam distilled from the dried fruit. (seed) Carrot seed oil has vasodilatory and smooth muscle relaxant properties and is considered completely non toxic. Note that carrot root oil is solvent (petrochemical) extracted.

Cetearyl alcohol

We use this combination of cetyl and steary fatty alcohols as our emulsifier, to bind together the water and oils parts of our creams and lotions. Although 'alcohols' are thought of as drying to the skin, this is not true of the fatty alcohols as the following extract on 'alcohol free' (courtesy of the US Food and Drug Administration) explains. 'For many years cosmetic manufacturers have marketed certain cosmetic products that do not contain ethyl alcohol (also known as ethanol, or grain alcohol) as "alcohol free." Some consumers select "alcohol free" products because they believe ethyl alcohol dries out their skin or hair. However, "alcohols" are a large and diverse family of chemicals, with different names and a variety of effects on the skin. This can lead to some confusion among consumers when they check the ingredient listings on cosmetic labels to determine alcohol content. In cosmetic labeling, the term "alcohol," used by itself, refers to ethyl alcohol. Cosmetic products, including those labeled "alcohol free," may contain other alcohols, such as cetyl, stearyl, cetearyl, or lanolin alcohol. These are known as fatty alcohols, and their effects on the skin are quite different from those of ethyl alcohol.'

Cetearyl Glucoside

An all natural emulsifier derived from corn and coconut oil. It is a compound of glucose and cetearyl alcohol. Cetearyl alcohol is from fatty alcohol’s. It helps skin and hair retain natural moisture and imparts a velvety feeling. Glucose occurs naturally in sugars.
Centella Oil

This plant is considered to be one of the most rejuvenating agents of Indian Ayurvedic Medicine and helps to speed healing of the skin, reduce inflammation and increase microcirculation.

Citric acid

Citric acid is directly 'derived from citrus fruit by fermentation of the crude sugars.' We use citric acid as an alkali/acid balancer. It also has important astringent and preserving qualities. Citric acid has no known toxicity.

Jojoba - Organic

Our Jojoba is naturally expressed from these unique desert plants of North America. Jojoba is a pure liquid wax comprised of mono-unsaturated fatty acids and alcohols. It is very similar to sperm whale oil which it has replaced due to pressure from the anti-whaling lobby. It is a wax rather than an oil and it is incredibly stable. You can heat jojoba to 285C for 4 days without any degradation. It's natural resistance to oxidation means that it doesn't require preservatives. Jojoba has natural moisturising and healing properties and is suitable for all skin types. It is useful for eczema and psoriasis and is an superb skin emollient.

Rosehip oil - Organic

Our rosehip oil is made by cold pressing the seeds of the wild south American rose, rosa aff. rubiginosa. This oil is very high in the essential fatty acids linoleic acid and linolenic acid and other unique phyto-substances.Rosehip oil has been used successfully with burn patients and also following radiation treatments. It is considered responsible for reducing healing times and has been found to reverse the aging effect of UV damage. We consider it one of the most important oils for the skin.

Shea butter - Organic

Shea is a natural plant butter made in a saponification process from the pits of the ripe green fruits of the African karite tree. The nuts are pitted and then dried before being either crushed and boiled in water or warm pressed. Shea butter contains over 50% natural triglycerides as well as natural fatty acids. It also contains a natural anti-oxidant, B-amyrine.

Our shea butter has a natural UV factor and also helps to improve the elasticity of the skin.It also increases capillary action in the skin leading to better elimination of metabolic waste through the skin.

Vegetable glycerin - Organic

Our glycerin comes from natural plant oils. It is made in a saponification process similar to soap making. Vegetable glycerin is considered non toxic. We use it for its excellent properties both as a humectant and an emmollient.

Vitamin E Natural - none GM

Vitamin E (delta tocopheryl) is a blend of naturally occurring mixed tocopheryls with vegetable oil. It's made by vacuum distillation of vegetable oils. Vitamin E has strong anti-oxidant properties, reducing the number of free radicals that can break loose in reactions between ingredient chemicals. It's also considered to have a positive effect on circulation, strengthen connective tissue and aid in the formation of skin cells. Research suggests natural vitamin E may have an anti-aging effect through topical application.

Xanthum gum

Xanthum gum is not naturally occurring as such, and the stories of xanthum trees are exaggerated. It is made from corn sugar fermented with a bacteria (xanthomanus campestris) that is native to cabbage plants. We use it as a natural thickener. It is considered to have no toxicity.
